Learning from crises: managing the change agenda

About the Talk

Organisational crises often generate “lessons to be learnt”. Unfortunately, this does not always occur. By examining the typical event sequence of crises it is possible to generate a framework for change identifying key success factors at each stage. Reasons for failure to change will also be discussed.

About the Speaker

Dr. Colin Pilbeam is a Principal Research Fellow at Cranfield University School of Management (UK). He holds doctorates in both Natural and Social Sciences, respectively from the University of Reading and the University of Bath. He has published a large number of articles and book chapters on risk and crisis management. His primary research interests lie in organizational design and the importance of organizational and individual networks. Taking a ‘network’ perspective, he is currently investigating safety leadership in service organizations sponsored by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (UK). Recently he co-edited with David Denyer the book “Managing Change in Extreme Contexts” (Routledge, 2015).

Bart Brandsma

Social and political philosopher / consultant / trainer (The Netherlands)

Polarisation: Understanding the dynamics of us versus them

About the Talk

Polarisation – Us versus them-thinking has a high impact on the social stability of our continent, our countries, societies, our cities and neighborhoods, our schools, ourselves ...
We need strong game changers to address the phenomenon.
Lots of professionals – police officers, mayors, radicalization experts, public prosecutors, teachers, managers, policy makers, social workers, journalists – feel inspired by our polarisation strategy and work with its well tried insights and a fully new approach.

About the Speaker

Bart Brandsma is a social and political philosopher, trainer and consultant. As a consultant Bart trains professionals from all over the world. Key in his work are dialogue, conflict and polarisation.
He worked in the media as journalist and as a documentary maker a/o for Amnesty international. He was nominated for the the Socrates reward for his book De hel dat is de ander on the difference in thinking from Muslims and non Muslims. His book Polarisation: Understanding the dynamics of us versus them was launched in November 2016 (the translation in English in 2017) and is a basis for professionals that have to deal with polarisation and want to develop adequate polarisation strategies.
What are the dynamics of polarisation? Can we gain insight into the operation and fixed patterns related to black-and-white thinking? What roles do we play? And what opportunities do we have to intervene?
The book teaches how our portrayal of Man plays tricks on us, what our opportunities are to create a strategy of depolarisation, and how this phenomenon of polarisation relates to its ‘little brother’ conflict. It gives highly-accessible insights into the possibilities and limitations of the use of dialogue and it offers four crucial benchmarks we need to combat polarisation.

Christopher Ensey

Chief Operating Officer of Riot Blockchain (US)

Rethinking information security for the modern age. Data as a sensor.

About the Talk

Chris will discuss key factors in defending modern computing platforms and distributed networks, and in keeping pace with threats linked to ever growing volumes of information. He will explore new models for using data as a sensor rather than traditional security approaches which are highly network centric. His talk will touch on the domains that will form the next stage for attacks, like blockchains, serverless infrastructures and IoT. He will cover tactics that can be employed to keep pace with the growing rate and increasing impact of such attacks. The concepts he will talk about can be applied in your own security models. He offers perspectives that cut across a broad spectrum. As a Security Operations Center (SOC) operator for a global client base, he offers insights into the challenges faced in scaling incident response.
